Mycelium pavilion

Common Ground

The building of a mycelium (mushroom tissues) pavilion in Zouhouri square. The structure served as a symbol of innovation and sustainability, as well as a stand-alone artwork and a reference point for the festival. The pavilion was built especially for the Larnaka BioDesign Festival by Dutch architect Stijn Dries and bioscientist Ivana Mik on the structural models of the prehistoric settlement of Choirokoitia. Notably, the world’s first mycelium pavilion was built in 2014 as a commission from the Museum of Modern Art New York (MOMA). Mycelium is a network of mycelial filaments that grows mainly below ground. The fact that it can and does grow in a three-dimensional structure makes it an attractive material for designers and architects.
