Drumming up Art and Hope
Drumming up Art and Hope was an exciting community music and sculpture project that took place on the weekend of 16 and 17 September in Tsiakkillero, Faneromeni, Agios Ioannis and Chrysopolitissa. Participants had the opportunity to create musical compositions using for percussion recyclable instruments under the guidance of musicians Maria Krambis and Andreas Georgiou. They also made their own clay sculptures under the guidance of visual artist Irini Konstantinou and shared with us recipes and personal stories. The activity in each neighborhood was concluded with a neighborhood "feast" where we shared stories and homemade food. Drumming Up Art & Hope culminated on September 24 in Zouhouri Square where all the groups and neighborhoods came together, bringing along their projects in a joint musical event and exhibition.
Princess Zehra
Larnaca 2030 presented the play "Princess Zehra" written by Costas Mannouris. Princess Zehra was a promenade theatrical play with six stops with six stories of people spread across space and time. A group of actors, musicians and residents invited the audience to walk the streets of Turkomahala and meet Mannouris' heroines and heroes, a little strange and otherworldly, yet everyday and familiar. The play took the form of a walking site-specific performance in Turkmahala, directed by Naya T. Karakosta and premiered on Sunday 24 September at 18:30. This was followed by four more performances on September 27 and 29 and October 14 and 15. The spectators-walkers met the performers at Zouhuri Square - the headquarters of Larnaca 2030 - starting their journey towards Turkomahala, in this urban transition point, so close to the city center but far from the social and artistic scene. The stage for the performance was the streets of Turkomahala with the stories coming to life through narration, re-enactment and music.
