Larnaka Biodesign Festival 2023

Common Ground

For the first time Cyprus and Larnaka hosted a festival of this kind, entering with confidence the international map of bio-design. Taking advantage of both the natural resources of Larnaka and the presence of important structures dealing with both construction, such as Youth Makerspace Larnaka, and sustainable development and the environment, such as the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), Larnaka 2030, starting with the first Larnaka BioDesign Festival, aimed to make the city a reference point in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region in the field of bio-design and sustainability.

The Larnaka Biodesign Festival included three important parts:

  1. The building of a mycelium (mushroom tissues) pavilion in Zouhouri square.
  2. The exhibition, under the title ‘BioSculpt: Co-Creating the Future’.
  3. A lecture by a Biodesign expert, William Myers, who spoke about the coupling of design technology and biology. An interactive workshop on biodesign and the sustainable use of materials was organised as well. These activities explored the latest developments in biodesign and made them accessible to a wider audience.

Yev Kravt was the curator of the Larnaka Biodesign Festival. The project received a grant from the “Kypria” programme of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus.
